Shutters on the Beach is a fancy hotel right on the beach in Santa Monica, California. It's owned and run by a company called Edward Thomas Collection of Hotels, also known as ETC Hotels. This company also owns another hotel nearby called Hotel Casa del Mar. Shutters on the Beach is part of a special group called The Leading Hotels of the World. The hotel has two restaurants: One Pico and Coast Beach Café and Bar.

Hotel History: When Shutters on the Beach Opened

Shutters on the Beach first opened its doors on June 8, 1993. It had 198 rooms back then. The hotel was built right on the beachfront in Santa Monica.

Before the hotel, this spot was home to different beach clubs since 1925. Some of these clubs included the Edgewater Beach Club and the Jonathan Club. The hotel's outside look is called "Craftsman-style." This design was made to remind people of old Southern California resorts from the 1920s. When it opened, Shutters on the Beach was the only hotel in Santa Monica that had direct access to the beach.

Hotel Design and Cool Features

The hotel was built by Hill Architects. It has 186 guest rooms and 12 suites. These rooms are spread across two buildings. The bigger building is called the Ocean House. The other building, the Beach House, is right on the sand. The Beach House is where you'll find the lobby, the two restaurants, and the bar.

Room Styles and Comfort

Some rooms at the hotel even have cozy fireplaces or jacuzzis. The rooms are decorated with special four-poster beds and comfy lounge chairs. They also have walnut desks and nightstands. The white bed linens are custom-made just for the hotel. Many people describe the hotel's style as "distinctively New England."

In 2005, a famous interior designer named Michael S. Smith updated the hotel rooms. He redesigned all 186 guest rooms and the 12 suites. He also worked on the hotel's spa, called One.

Art and Partnerships

The hotel has a cool collection of art. You can see works by famous artists like Jasper Johns, Frank Gehry, and David Hockney. Other artists include Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Motherwell, and William Wegman.

Shutters on the Beach has also worked with popular designers. They've partnered with Joie, Kate Spade (for guest bicycles), and Clare Vivier (for canvas tote bags).

Eco-Friendly Efforts

Shutters on the Beach is known for being one of the most eco-friendly hotels in Los Angeles. In 2014, the hotel bought an electric car. It was a 2014 Tesla S P85. This car became the hotel's official house car. Guests staying in a luxury suite could use it for free. It was the first hotel in Los Angeles to offer a Tesla car to its guests.

During the Christmas holidays, the hotel offers to put Christmas trees right in the guest rooms. In 2015, the hotel started a program called AIRR. This program helps guests relax and handle stress better. It includes group workshops and special retreats.

Dining Options at Shutters on the Beach

The hotel has two main restaurants: One Pico and Coast Beach Café and Bar.

One Pico Restaurant

One Pico is the more formal restaurant. It offers amazing views of the ocean and the Santa Monica Pier. This restaurant first opened in 1993. It was updated in 2008 by Michael S. Smith. One Pico also has a wine list that has won awards from Wine Spectator.

Coast Beach Café and Bar

Coast is a more relaxed place to eat. It's located right at beach level. Coast opened in the summer of 2007 and was designed by Jim Gillam.
