Siasconset started as a fishing village way back in the 1600s. Some of the oldest houses, like parts of Auld Lang Syne, might be from the 1670s. This makes them some of the oldest homes on Nantucket Island. Many of these early cottages were expanded over time. They were added to in a unique way, which gives them their special look today.

Whaling and Tourism in Siasconset

In the 1800s, Siasconset was also a place for whaling. This was when people hunted whales for oil and other products. Later, in 1877, a man named Edward Underhill bought land here. He built new cottages that looked like the old fishing shacks. He rented these homes to people visiting for the summer. After he passed away, these cottages were sold.

Siasconset as an Actors' Retreat

In the early 1900s, Siasconset became a popular summer spot for actors. Many famous actors of that time came to relax here. Some of them included Digby Bell, Joseph Jefferson, and DeWolf Hopper. It was a quiet place for them to get away from city life.

Famous Residents and Coastal Changes

Bill Belichick, a well-known former coach of the New England Patriots football team, has lived in Siasconset for many years. He has owned homes there since 1979.

In recent times, the cliffs along the coast of Siasconset have been eroding. This means the land is slowly wearing away into the ocean. There has been some discussion about using special tubes called geotubes to help protect the land.

Meaning of the Name Siasconset

The name Siasconset comes from the Wampanoag language. This was the language of the Native American people who lived in the area. It means "place of great bones." The word "Si" comes from "missi," meaning "great." And "ascon" comes from "askon," meaning "horn or bone."
