Sid LeProtti (sometimes spelled Le Protti) was a talented piano player and band leader. He was from Oakland, California. He became famous in a lively area of San Francisco called the Barbary Coast.
Sid's mother was African American and his father was an Italian immigrant. He grew up with his grandparents. When he was a child, he learned to play classical piano music. His teacher was a German immigrant. Sid first heard ragtime music when he was about 10 years old.
From 1907 to 1917, Sid LeProtti led a group called the So Different Jazz Band. This band was the main band at a dance club in the Barbary Coast. The club was also called "So Different."
Music and Dance
Sid LeProtti and other musicians in San Francisco played many kinds of music. Besides classical and ragtime, they played music for different round dances. These included mazurkas, waltzes, two-steps, marches, polkas, and schottisches. These were all popular dances in the early 1900s.
Later Life
Later in his life, Sid LeProtti shared his stories and music. He was interviewed by two important people in music history. These were George Avakian, a famous record producer, and Turk Murphy, a well-known jazz musician. They wanted to learn about his life and the music he played.
