Sidmouth Rock is a small, rocky island located in the Southern Ocean. It sits off the southern coast of Tasmania, a state in Australia. This island is about 28 kilometers (17 miles) south-east of South East Cape.
Sidmouth Rock is part of the Southwest National Park. This park is also a part of the amazing Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Site. The island is a piece of land that broke away from the main Tasmanian island. Scientists believe it separated at least 15,000 years ago. It is about 90 meters (295 feet) across.
Where is Sidmouth Rock?
Sidmouth Rock is located about 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of another small island called Eddystone. Both are found near the South East Cape of Tasmania.
Because of its small size and location, waves often crash over Sidmouth Rock. This means no plants or animals that live on land can survive there.
A Special Place for Birds
Even though nothing lives on the rock, Sidmouth Rock is very important for birds. It is part of something called the Pedra Branca Important Bird Area. This area also includes the nearby Eddystone and Pedra Branca islets.
This special area is recognized by BirdLife International. It's important because it provides a home for many shy albatrosses and Australasian gannets. More than 1% of the world's population of these birds live or breed here.
