Formed by Limestone

The Sierra de Guara is a cool mountain area in Spain. It's located in the Huesca province, which is in the northern part of Aragon. The tallest peak in this mountain range is called Tozal de Guara, standing high at 2,077 meters (about 6,814 feet).

This amazing mountain area is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) northeast of the city of Huesca. A big part of the Sierra de Guara is now a special protected area called the Sierra y Cañones de Guara Natural Park. This park is huge, stretching 43 kilometers (27 miles) from west to east and 25 kilometers (15 miles) from north to south. It includes not only the Sierra de Guara but also other nearby mountain ranges like Sierra de Gabardiella and Sierra de Arangol.

Exploring the Landscape

Many rivers flow through the Sierra de Guara from north to south. These rivers start high up in the mountains. As they flow, they carve out incredible, deep canyons and gorges. Some of the main rivers you'll find here are the Rio Alcanadre, Rio Guatizalema, Rio Vero, and Rio Isuala. All these rivers eventually flow into the larger Ebro river.

How the Mountains Formed

The Sierra de Guara mountains are mostly made of a type of rock called limestone. This limestone formed a very long time ago. On the southern side of the mountains, you can also find a rough type of sandstone. This sandstone is made up of many small, rounded rocks stuck together, like a natural concrete.

Towns and Villages Nearby

Not many people live deep inside the Sierra de Guara. You might even find some old, empty villages there. However, some villages like Alquézar and Rodellar have become popular again. This is because more and more tourists are visiting them. To the northeast of the natural park is the historic city of Ainsa. To the south, you'll find the town of Barbastro.

Fun Activities and Sports

The Sierra de Guara is famous for exciting outdoor activities. It's especially known for canyoning. This sport involves traveling down canyons by walking, climbing, jumping, and even swimming through the water.

Rock Climbing and Caving

Rock climbing is another very popular activity here. People also enjoy caving, which is exploring the cool caves found in the mountains.

Walking and Wildlife

If you prefer something a bit calmer, you can go walking and enjoy the beautiful scenery. Many people also love watching the wildlife. The area around Rodellar village is one of the most famous rock climbing spots in all of Europe!
