The Sierra tiger lily, also called the alpine lily, is a beautiful type of lily. Its scientific name is Lilium parvum. This plant grows naturally in the mountains of the western United States. You can mostly find it in the Sierra Nevada mountains of California. It also grows in parts of northwestern Nevada and southwestern Oregon. The Sierra tiger lily likes to live in high-up forests. It sends up its flowering stems during the warm summer months.
What Does the Sierra Tiger Lily Look Like?
The flowers of the Lilium parvum are quite special. They are smaller than most other lilies. Their shape is more like a bell. The flowers are usually yellowish-orange to a dark orange-red. Their centers are often a lighter orange or yellow. You might also see purple or brown spots on the petals.
There is a unique type of this lily that grows in the foothills of El Dorado County, California. These flowers are a lighter pink color. People sometimes call them "ditch lilies." The Sierra tiger lily can also mix its genes with other Lilium species. This happens when different lily types grow close together.
