Original Name: Haggerty
The area we now call Sigel was first named Haggerty. It was planned out in 1850 by a person named Judah P. Haggerty. When a place is "laid out," it means someone planned where the streets and buildings would go.
Renamed for a Civil War Hero
In 1865, the community's name was changed from Haggerty to Sigel. This new name honors Franz Sigel, who was a major general during the American Civil War. He was a German-American military officer who fought for the Union (the northern states) during the war.
