The Story of Silver City
How Silver City Began
Silver City started in 1859. It got its name because people found lots of silver nearby. This area was close to the Lyon and Carson border. Many travelers passed through a narrow valley called Gold Canyon. They were on their way to the rich silver mines of the Comstock Lode. This famous mining area was a big deal back then.
A Busy Mining Town
By 1861, Silver City was growing fast. It had four hotels and many places for people to stay. There were also several saloons. About 1,200 people lived in the town. Silver City was important for miners. It offered places for their animals to rest. These animals pulled wagons full of ore from the Comstock mines. They took the ore to mills along the Carson River.
In 1862, a special factory called a foundry moved to Silver City. This was the first place in Nevada that worked with iron. The town was also home to Paul's Pioneer. This was the very first silver mill in the Comstock area. By 1871, Silver City had eight mills. These mills used 95 "stamps" to crush the ore. A stamp mill is a machine that crushes rocks to get the valuable metals out.
The Railroad Changes Everything
The town's population started to shrink after 1869. This was when the Virginia and Truckee Railroad was finished. The railroad made it easier to move goods and people. Many construction workers left the area. They took their businesses with them. This meant fewer people lived and worked in Silver City.
