Silver Lake is a special kind of lake in Lake County, Oregon, United States. It is called an intermittent lake. This means it sometimes has water and sometimes dries up. It is found in a high-desert area.
The lake is about 6 miles (10 km) east of the town also called Silver Lake. People are not sure who first named the lake. Some people in Central Oregon think John C. Frémont named it. But there is no proof of this. He would not have seen the lake on his first trip to Oregon in 1843.
The Klamath are a Native American tribe. They called the lake Kalpshi. This name might come from the word kalapsh. That word means a decayed log. They used this name because of the petrified wood found near the lake. Petrified wood is like fossilized wood. It has turned into rock over a very long time.
