Station History

The Silverstream railway station you see today opened on March 1, 1954. It replaced an older station. The train line was moved a bit west of the old one. It now crosses the Hutt River on a strong steel bridge. The new station is a few hundred meters north of where the old one used to be.

Around 2000, a small fire damaged the station. This caused leaks and left the shelter without lights for several years. The fire damage also showed that the station used to have toilets, but they were boarded up.

In 2019 and 2020, the Greater Wellington Regional Council planned to "renew" or update the Silverstream railway station.
