History of Silverton
Early Days and Mining
Silverton got its own post office in 1892. This office helped people send and receive mail. It stayed open for many years, finally closing in 1945. The name "Silverton" was given to the area by the miners who lived and worked there. They likely found silver or other valuable minerals nearby.
Forest Rangers and a Nature Camp
A special office for forest rangers, called the Silverton Ranger District, opened in 1908. It was part of the Mount Baker National Forest. This ranger station helped manage the forest. It closed in 1936, before the Mountain Loop Highway was fully built.
After the ranger station closed, the building was used for something new. It became a nature camp called Camp Silverton. Different private groups and the Everett Public Schools used it for educational programs. Kids could learn about nature there. The camp was used until 1997. Sadly, the camp building was taken down in 2019.
