Who Was Silvester de Everdon?
Silvester de Everdon came from a village called Everdon. This village is near Daventry in Northamptonshire, England. We don't know much about his family, except that he was connected to a well-known local family called Thorp.
He started his career as a priest in Northamptonshire around 1219. Later, in 1229, he began working for Ralph Neville. Neville was both a bishop and the Lord Chancellor at the time. Silvester worked as a clerk in the chancery, which was like the king's main office for writing important documents. He stayed in this office for many years.
Becoming Lord Chancellor
In 1244, Silvester de Everdon became the Lord Chancellor himself. This was a very important job, as the Lord Chancellor was one of the king's chief advisors. He held this position until 1246. In 1245, he also became the Archdeacon of Chester, another important church role.
Becoming Bishop of Carlisle
Around September 1246, Silvester was chosen to be the Bishop of Carlisle. However, he first said no to the job. He might have been worried about getting a church position as a reward for his government work.
King Henry III of England really wanted Silvester to be bishop. The king convinced him that it was the right thing to do. So, in November 1246, Silvester was chosen again and this time he accepted. A writer named Matthew Paris described Silvester as "the king's faithful clerk." He said Silvester was "dear and close" to the king and was very wise in his work.
Silvester de Everdon officially became Bishop of Carlisle on October 13, 1247.
What Did Bishop Silvester Do?
As Bishop of Carlisle, Silvester de Everdon worked to solve a long-running problem. This problem was about money between the bishop and the church's canons (other priests). He helped make things fair for everyone.
He also worked as a royal justice, which meant he helped make legal decisions for the king. He attended meetings of the parliament, where important decisions for the country were made.
The End of His Life
Silvester de Everdon died in the spring of 1254. He was on his way to meet the king when he was thrown from his horse. This accident happened near Northampton.
It is believed that Silvester de Everdon was buried in the Temple Church in London.
