Sim (Russian: Сим) is a town in Ashinsky District of Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia. It is located on the Sim River. The town is about 340 kilometers (210 mi) west of Chelyabinsk. Sim is an important local center for its area. In 2010, about 14,466 people lived there.
A Look at Sim's Past
Sim was started in 1759. It was first called Simsky Zavod. This name means Sim's Plant. The town grew around a factory that made iron. This factory was very important for the area.
Later, on November 13, 1942, the settlement changed its name to Sim. It also officially became a town on this date.
Famous People from Sim
Sim is known as the birthplace of Igor Kurchatov. He was a very famous Soviet and Russian scientist. Kurchatov was a physicist, which means he studied how matter and energy work.
