The Simei MRT station is a train station in Singapore. It is part of the MRT system. This station is located above the ground. You can find it on the East West line.
The station is in the Tampines area of Singapore. It sits right in the middle of the Simei housing estate. The station is between Simei Street 1 and Simei Street 3. It is also very close to Eastpoint Mall. This station mainly serves the people living in Simei. Simei is a neighborhood within the larger Tampines New Town.
The name "Simei" comes from a Chinese word. It means "four beauties." This name was chosen to honor four famous ancient Chinese women.
How Simei Station Started
From Tampines South to Simei
Before the station was built, it had a different name. It was first called Tampines South. But in 1985, the name was changed to Simei. This happened before the station officially opened in 1989. The new name, Simei, was chosen to match the area it served. The station was now located right inside the Simei neighborhood.
Making the Station Safer
Many of the first above-ground stations on the East West line did not have special safety doors. These are called platform screen doors. They help keep people safe from the tracks.
After trying them out at other stations, half-height platform screen doors were added to Simei station. These doors started working on July 3, 2011. Also in 2011, large fans were put on the ceiling of the platform. These are called high-volume low-speed fans. They help to keep the air cool and moving for passengers.
