Simon Busk Poulsen (born 7 October 1984) is a Danish former professional footballer. He played as a left-back, which is a defensive position on the left side of the field.

Poulsen played 31 games for the Denmark national team. After he stopped playing professionally, he became a coach. He is currently an assistant coach for SønderjyskE.

Club Career Highlights

Starting at SønderjyskE

Simon Poulsen was born and grew up in Sønderborg, Denmark. He started playing football at a young age. He played for local clubs like Ulkebøl and SUB Sønderborg. Later, he joined Haderslev Fodboldklub. This club later changed its name to SønderjyskE.

Poulsen signed his first professional contract with SønderjyskE. He was even named the club's junior player of the year. In 2001, he joined the club's main team. He scored a goal in his very first game. This was a 4–2 win against FC Aarhus in the Danish Cup. He later said it was one of the best days of his life. He became the youngest goal scorer in the Danish Cup at that time.

Poulsen played more games for SønderjyskE in the 2002–03 season. He scored his first goal for the club on 30 September 2002. He scored three more goals that season. Because of his good play, he signed a new contract until 2006.

Over the next two seasons, Poulsen continued to play well for SønderjyskE. He scored his first goal of the 2003–04 season on 31 July 2003. His goal-scoring improved a lot. He scored 18 goals in total over these two seasons. His two goals against Fredericia helped SønderjyskE get promoted to the Danish Superliga. Even with some injuries, he played 51 games and scored 18 goals.

At the start of the 2005–06 season, Poulsen played five more games for SønderjyskE. He scored his first goal in the Danish Superliga on 7 August 2005. After he left the club, he was honored at Sydbank Park.

Moving to FC Midtjylland

On 24 June 2005, Poulsen decided to join Midtjylland. This was another team in the Danish Superliga. He signed a three-year contract. The move was officially completed on 15 August 2005.

Poulsen played his first game for FC Midtjylland on 21 August 2005. He scored his first goal in that game, which ended in a 3–3 draw. He quickly became an important player for the team. He also played in the UEFA Cup, but FC Midtjylland was knocked out. He had a knee injury that kept him out for a month. He returned to play in May 2006.

In the 2006–07 season, Poulsen continued to play in midfield for FC Midtjylland. He scored his first goal of the season on 20 August 2006. He helped the club finish second in the league. Even with some injuries, he played 28 games and scored one goal.

At the start of the 2008–09 season, Poulsen did not play much for the main team. He played some games for the reserve team, Jong AZ Alkmaar. In February, he started playing as a left-back. Return to AZ Alkmaar

On the same day he left Sampdoria, 16 January 2014, Poulsen rejoined AZ Alkmaar. He signed a contract until 2015. He played his first game back for AZ Alkmaar on 8 February 2014. He quickly became a regular player again. He helped the team keep four clean sheets in March 2014. He also played his 100th league game for AZ Alkmaar. He played 18 games that season.

At the start of the 2014–15 season, Poulsen continued to play as a left-back. He scored his first goal of the season on 27 September 2014. He helped AZ Alkmaar keep three clean sheets in November 2014. He had a calf injury but returned in December. He scored his second goal on 17 January 2015. He also set up a goal to help AZ Alkmaar win against Ajax. He scored his third goal on 21 February 2015. He played 35 games and scored three goals that season.

Playing for PSV Eindhoven

On 15 May 2015, Poulsen joined PSV for free. He signed a two-year contract. He played his first game for PSV Eindhoven on 2 August 2015. This was in the Johan Cruijff Schaal, which PSV won 3–0. Before the 2017–18 season, Poulsen was named the team's vice-captain. He started the first four league games. He scored his first goal since returning to the club on 16 September 2017. He played for the Denmark under-19 and Denmark U20 teams. He played 25 games and scored one goal for these youth teams. In April 2004, he was chosen for the Denmark under-21 national team. He played his first U21 game on 16 August 2005. In May 2006, he played in the 2006 European Under-21 Championship. He scored his first U21 goal on 16 August 2006. He played 11 games and scored one goal for the U21 team.

Poulsen was called up to the Denmark national team in March 2007. He made his debut in a friendly game against Germany on 28 March 2007. Denmark won 1–0. He also played in two UEFA Euro 2008 qualification games in November 2007.

He was called back to the team in May 2010 for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He played his first game back for Denmark on 27 May 2010. He was part of the final World Cup squad. In their first World Cup game against the Netherlands, a ball bounced off him and led to an own goal for Denmark. Denmark lost 2–0. He played two more games in the tournament, but Denmark was eliminated in the group stage.

After the World Cup, Poulsen played against Germany in August 2010 but got injured. He was called up again in February 2011. He played in three more UEFA Euro 2012 qualifying matches. He helped Denmark qualify for UEFA Euro 2012. In May 2012, he was chosen for the Euro 2012 squad. He started in the game against the Netherlands on 9 June 2012. He set up the only goal of the game, helping Denmark win 1–0. He played two more games in the tournament, but Denmark was eliminated in the group stage.

Poulsen was called up again in March 2013. He played against the Czech Republic on 22 March 2013. Denmark won 3–0. He played three more games that year, but Denmark did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup.

He was called up again in September 2014. He played against Portugal on 14 October 2014. He played five more games after that. He was on the bench for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs against Sweden. Denmark did not qualify for UEFA Euro 2016. After this, Poulsen was not called up to the Denmark squad again. He played 31 games for the national team in total.

Personal Life

Simon Poulsen's family moved to Haderslev when he joined Haderslev Fodboldklub. His mother, Bibbi Poulsen, supported him in becoming a professional footballer. He is married to Mette, and they have a daughter. He once described a week as "fantastic" because his daughter was born and he scored a goal in the same week.
