Simone Ortega Klein (born May 29, 1919, died July 2, 2008) was a very popular Spanish author who wrote about cooking. She was born in Barcelona, Spain. Her family came from Alsace in France.
In 1972, Simone Ortega published her first and most famous book. It was called 1080 recetas de cocina (which means 1080 Recipes). She was married to a publisher named José Ortega Spottorno. He was the son of the famous thinker José Ortega y Gasset. José Ortega Spottorno also started the Spanish newspaper El País. He passed away in 2002.
Her Famous Cookbook
Simone Ortega's bestselling book, 1080 recetas de cocina, has sold over 3.5 million copies in Spain. It has been updated many times. By 2007, it was on its 48th edition! This shows how much people loved her recipes.
Awards and Honors
Simone Ortega received several special awards for her work.
- In 1987, she won the Spanish Special Prize of Gastronomy. This award celebrates great food and cooking.
- In 2006, she received the Spain Food Awards Special Prize. The people who gave her this award said she spent her whole life teaching people about good cooking. They especially praised her focus on high-quality Spanish ingredients.
- Also in 2006, the French government gave her a special honor called the Order of Arts and Letters. At the ceremony in Madrid, Simone Ortega said that cooking was what brought France and Spain closer together.
