The History of Simonsville
Simonsville started out with a different name. It was first called Mill Point. This name came from a special building called a grist mill. A grist mill is a place where grain, like wheat, is ground into flour. James Leithead built the first mill there.
How Simonsville Got Its Name
The name of the town changed to Simonsville in December 1865. It was named after a person named Orrawell Simons. He built another grist mill in the town in 1866.
Why Simonsville Became a Ghost Town
Simonsville was abandoned in 1870. Many other farms and settlements in the Moapa Valley were also left empty around this time. This happened because of a disagreement over taxes with the Nevada state government. After the people left, Simonsville was never settled again.
Simonsville Today
Today, it is hard to find the exact spot where Mill Point and Simonsville once stood. The area is now covered by a flood control bridge built by Clark County. Also, new roads for the airport have changed the landscape.
