Simpelveld is a small and charming place in the southeastern Netherlands. It is both a municipality (like a local government area) and a town. Simpelveld is part of a group of towns called Parkstad Limburg.
This area is known as the Mergelland. This name comes from the soft, chalky rock (called mergel) found here. The region has many beautiful hills, making it a popular spot for tourists. A famous route for visitors, the Mergellandroute, even passes right through Simpelveld.
Simpelveld has 28 special buildings called national monuments. These are important historical sites, like the Oude Molen (Old Mill) and the Saint Remigius Church. The town also has a cool heritage railway station. This is the home base for the South Limburg Railway Company. They run old steam trains! Sometimes, in October, you can even experience a "Day Out with Thomas" event, based on the popular children's show Thomas and Friends.
