The Simpson Desert is a special area in South Australia, Australia. It's about 920 kilometers (570 miles) north of Adelaide, the capital city. This area is named after the famous Simpson Desert itself.
This specific area was officially named 'Simpson Desert' on April 26, 2013. It got its name from the much larger desert that has been known by that name for a long time.
Protecting the Simpson Desert
The main purpose of this area is to protect nature. The entire locality is now part of the Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert National Park. This park was officially created on November 26, 2021. It combined two older protected areas: the Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert Conservation Park and the Munga-Thirri–Simpson Desert Regional Reserve.
Government and Location
The Simpson Desert locality is part of a few important government areas. It is in the federal division of Grey. It also falls within the state electoral district of Stuart. The area is part of the Pastoral Unincorporated Area of South Australia. It is also found in the state’s Far North region.
