Sinéad Moira Cusack (born 18 February 1948) is a famous Irish actress known for her work in theatre, film, and television. She began her career at the well-known Abbey Theatre in Dublin. Later, she moved to London to join the famous Royal Shakespeare Company.

Cusack has won many awards for her acting. These include the Critics' Circle and Evening Standard Awards for her role in the play Our Lady of Sligo. She has also been nominated for two Tony Awards, which are major awards for live theatre in the United States. In addition, she has received five nominations for the Olivier Award, a top honour for theatre in the United Kingdom. In 2020, The Irish Times newspaper named her one of Ireland's greatest film actors.

Early Life and Family

Sinéad Cusack was born Jane Moira Cusack in Dalkey, a town in County Dublin, Ireland. She comes from a family of actors. Her parents, Cyril Cusack and Maureen Cusack, were both actors. Her sisters, Sorcha Cusack and Niamh Cusack, and her half-sister, Catherine Cusack, are also actresses. Her father, who was born in South Africa, worked at the famous Gate Theatre in Dublin.

Acting Career

Success on the Stage

Cusack's first acting jobs were at the Abbey Theatre in Dublin. In 1975, she moved to London and joined the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). The RSC is one of the most respected theatre companies in the world. Her work with them earned her many awards and nominations.

She won a Clarence Derwent Award and her first Olivier Award nomination for playing Celia in As You Like It. She received two more Olivier nominations for her roles in The Maid's Tragedy and The Taming of the Shrew.

In 1984, Cusack made her debut on Broadway in New York City with the RSC. She starred in two plays: Cyrano de Bergerac and Much Ado About Nothing. For her role as Beatrice in Much Ado About Nothing, she was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress.

One of her most famous stage roles was in the play Our Lady of Sligo in 1998. She played the main character, Mai O'Hara, in Ireland, on Broadway, and at the National Theatre in London. This performance won her the Evening Standard Theatre Award and the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Best Actress.

In 2006, she starred in the play Rock 'n' Roll. The show was a hit in London and on Broadway. It earned Cusack another Tony Award nomination and her fifth Olivier Award nomination.

Work in Movies and Television

Cusack has also had a successful career in film and television. She starred with the famous comedian Peter Sellers in the 1970 movie Hoffman. She also appeared in TV shows like The Persuaders! with Tony Curtis and Roger Moore.

She has acted in several movies with her husband, Jeremy Irons. They appeared together in Waterland (1992) and Stealing Beauty (1996). Some of her other well-known movies include V for Vendetta (2005) and Eastern Promises (2007).

Her performance in the 2013 film The Sea won her an IFTA Award (Irish Film and Television Award) for Best Supporting Actress. She was also nominated for an IFTA Award for the movie Queen and Country (2014).

On television, she has appeared in many series. She played Mrs. Thornton in the BBC's North and South (2004). She also had roles in the fantasy series Camelot (2011) and the crime drama Marcella (2016).

Personal Life

In 1978, Cusack married the English actor Jeremy Irons. They have two sons, Samuel James and Max Irons, who is also an actor.

When Cusack was a young woman in 1967, she had a son that she placed for adoption. Years later, in 2007, she was reunited with him. Her son is Richard Boyd Barrett, an Irish politician. He is a member of the Dáil Éireann, which is the lower house of the Irish parliament. Cusack has supported him in his political career and has joined him at election events.

Cusack is a patron of the Burma Campaign UK. This is a group that works to support human rights in the country of Burma (also known as Myanmar). In 2010, she signed a pledge created by the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign to show support for the Palestinian people.
