Early Life and the Irish Rebellion

In 1641, when he was about 25 years old, Gerard Irvine was a captain. He led a group of soldiers on horseback, called a "troop of horse." These soldiers were part of King Charles I of England's army. They were fighting during the Irish Rebellion of 1641.

Fighting for the King

Irvine was very loyal to King Charles I. He fought for the King's side, known as the Royalists, during the English Civil War. This war was a big fight between the King and the Parliament.

Escape and New Battles

Sir Gerard fought in the northwest of Ireland. However, he was captured by the Parliament's soldiers, who were called Parliamentarians. He was even sentenced to death! Luckily, he was rescued from the city of Cork before this could happen.

After his escape, he continued to fight. In 1651, he joined King Charles II's army. This was at the important Battle of Worcester. He served as a lieutenant colonel, which is a high-ranking officer. He worked under another brave soldier, Sir Arthur Forbes.

Irvine also took part in a smaller uprising called Glencairn's rising in 1653. After this, he had to flee back to Ireland for safety.

A Return to Importance

Sir Gerard Irvine became important again after the King returned to power. This period was known as the Stuart Restoration. In 1672, he became the High Sheriff of Fermanagh. This was a very important job, like being the chief law officer for the county.

Becoming a Baronet

On July 31, 1677, King Charles II gave him a special honor. Sir Gerard was made a baronet. This is a title that can be passed down in a family, like a knight but with a higher rank. His title was "Baronet, of Castle Irvine," and it was part of the Baronetage of Ireland.

Family and Legacy

Sir Gerard Irvine passed away in October 1689 in Dundalk. He was still serving King William III of England during the Williamite War in Ireland at the time.

He was married twice. His first wife, Catherine, did not have any children. His second wife, Mary, had two sons and a daughter named Mary. His sons passed away before him. His daughter Mary married John Crichton, and their family later became the Earls of Erne. Since his sons died before him and he had no other male heirs, Sir Gerard's baronet title ended when he died.
