Sir Henry Hugh Hoare, 3rd Baronet (1762–1841) was an important English banker. He was a partner in Hoare's Bank, a famous family bank. He was also very interested in the activities of the Church of England.

Sir Henry's Early Life and Family

Henry Hugh Hoare was born in 1762 at a place called Barn Elms. His father was Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Baronet. His mother was Frances Ann Acland. He had an older half-brother, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Baronet, and a younger brother, Charles Hoare. His sister, Henrietta Anne, married Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, 10th Baronet. People often knew him as Hugh.

Joining the Royal Society

In 1784, when he was 22, Henry Hugh Hoare became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a special group for people who have done important work in science.

His Role at Hoare's Bank

Henry joined his family's bank, Hoare's Bank, in 1785. This was a big step in his career. Around 1788, Henry Hoare of Mitcham Grove became the head of the bank.

Homes and Estates

When his father died in 1787, Henry inherited the family home at Barn Elms. However, he did not live there much. He later sold it in 1827 to the company building the Hammersmith Bridge. In 1789, he bought a house in London on St James's Square.

In 1797, Henry bought a large estate in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire. He was a keen farmer and was known for improving his land. He used new methods like special drainage and the "Scotch plough" to make his farms better.

Leading the Bank

In 1828, Henry Hoare of Mitcham Grove passed away. Henry Hugh Hoare then became the senior partner, or head, of Hoare's Bank. In 1829, the bank opened new offices on Fleet Street in London. His brother Charles helped oversee the building work.

Inheriting a Title and Estate

When his half-brother Richard died in 1838, Henry Hugh Hoare inherited the title of Baronet. He also inherited the family estate called Stourhead in Wiltshire. He hired an architect named Charles Parker to add a grand entrance, called a portico, to Stourhead House. This was part of the house's original design.

Henry Hugh Hoare passed away in 1841 at his home in Wavendon.

Henry Hugh Hoare was very involved with the Church of England. He served as the treasurer for the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts. This group worked to spread the Christian faith in other countries.

Rebuilding St Dunstan-in-the-West

The church of St Dunstan-in-the-West on Fleet Street was rebuilt in the 1830s. This church was right across the road from Hoare's Bank. Henry Hugh Hoare was the leader of the building committee for this project. He and his brothers also donated the beautiful new altar window for the church. This window was designed by Thomas Willement.

In 1837, Henry was also part of a committee for the Additional Curates' Society. This group helped provide more priests for churches that needed them.
