Sir Henry George Hill Mulholland (born December 20, 1888 – died March 5, 1971) was an important politician from Northern Ireland. He was also known as the 1st Baronet, which is a special title.

Who Was Sir Henry Mulholland?

Henry George Hill Mulholland was the third son of the 2nd Baron Dunleath. His mother was Norah Louisa Fanny Ward. He went to two famous schools: Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.

His Cricket Days

While at Cambridge University, Henry was a very good cricket player. He earned a "Blue" for cricket, which means he was one of the best players on the university team. He played for three seasons, from 1911 to 1913. He also played a special kind of cricket match called a "first-class" game for the Ireland team in 1911. This match was against the Scotland team.

His Political Career

Henry Mulholland was a member of the House of Commons of Northern Ireland. This was like their parliament or main government group. He represented the area called Down.

He held several important jobs in the government:

  • From 1925 to 1929, he was an Assistant Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Finance. This meant he helped manage the country's money.
  • During the same time, he was also an Assistant Whip. A whip helps make sure that members of a political party vote together.
  • After 1929, he became the Speaker of the House. The Speaker is like the referee or leader who makes sure meetings run smoothly and fairly.

In 1930, he joined the Privy Council of Northern Ireland. This is a group of important advisors to the government. In 1945, he was given the special title of Baronet. This title was connected to Ballyscullion Park in County Londonderry.

Family Life

Henry Mulholland married Sheelah Brooke. Her father was Sir Arthur Brooke, and her brother was Basil Brooke, who later became the Prime Minister of Northern Ireland.

Henry Mulholland passed away in March 1971 when he was 82 years old. His son, Michael, took over his Baronet title. Later, in 1993, Michael also became the fifth Baron Dunleath after his cousin.
