Early Life and Military Adventures
Sir John Dick Lauder was born in a place called Relugas on April 21, 1813. When he was younger, he had some exciting adventures. For two years, he served in the Portuguese Army. This was during a time when Portugal was having a Civil War, which ended in 1834.
After his time in Portugal, he joined the Honourable East India Company's Bengal Army. This was in 1834. He started as a Cadet and became an Ensign the next year. He arrived in India in July 1835. He was promoted to lieutenant in December 1838.
Serving in India
In February 1839, he became an adjutant for the East India Company's Jalaun Corps. This group later became known as the Bundelkhand Legion. He helped deal with problems in areas like Bundelkhand (from 1840 to 1841), Jigni, and Chirgaon.
He even became the Acting Captain-Commandant of the cavalry for the Bundelkhand Legion in January 1842. He spent about 10 months in Singapore and China from 1843 to 1844. He then returned to India and the Legion. Sir John Dick Lauder left the army in May 1847. After that, he went back to live a civilian life in Scotland.
Life in Scotland
After his military career, Sir John Dick Lauder became a Knight of Justice of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. This is a very old and respected order. He had several homes in Scotland. These included Fountainhall Manor, which was near Pencaitland. He also had Grange House, which was close to Edinburgh. He also had a residence in Edinburgh at 13 Grosvernor Crescent.
Family Life
On May 22, 1845, Sir John Dick Lauder married Lady Anne. She was born in 1820 and lived until 1919. Lady Anne was the daughter of North Dalrymple, 9th Earl of Stair. They got married at St Cuthbert's in Edinburgh.
Sir John and Lady Anne had a large family. They had three daughters and four sons. His oldest son and heir, Sir Thomas North Dick-Lauder, took over his title after him.
Later Years
Sir John Dick Lauder passed away in Bournemouth, Hampshire, on March 23, 1867. His death was mentioned in the Illustrated London News newspaper on April 6, 1867.
