John Pound was born in the City of London, England, on June 27, 1829. His parents were Henry Pound and Alfred Victor Allen.

In 1856, John Pound married Harriet Lulham. They had six children together.

John Pound & Co.

The business known as John Pound & Co. was actually started by John's father, Henry Pound. He began the company with a partner, Mr. Tasker, in 1823. Their first shop was on Leadenhall Street in London. They focused on making high-quality trunks and packing cases.

After Mr. Tasker passed away in 1857, Henry Pound changed the company name to Henry Pound & Son. He trained his oldest son, John, in the business. When Henry Pound died in 1861, John took over. He renamed the company John Pound & Co. and worked hard to make it the biggest luggage business in the United Kingdom.

By 1871, the company had grown a lot. It had three factories and eight large storage warehouses. They also had five shops in central London, including famous streets like Regent Street and Oxford Street. Besides luggage, they made many other items. These included hunting bags, hat cases, writing cases, and purses.

When John Pound became the Lord Mayor of London in 1904, he gave the business to his two older sons. The company continued to operate on its own for many years. In the early 1950s, a larger company called the John Lewis Partnership bought John Pound & Co. Later, in 2013, the John Pound brand was bought by Stuart Eggleton.

Important Roles in London

Besides running his successful business, John Pound held many important positions in London's government and community.

He was a member of several old trade groups called "Worshipful Companies." He became the leader of the Worshipful Company of Leathersellers, the Worshipful Company of Fan Makers, and the Worshipful Company of Fruiterers.

Because of his leadership, he became an Alderman for the Ward of Aldgate in London. He held this role from 1892 to 1915. He also became a Lieutenant of the City of London. In 1895, he was chosen to be the Sheriff of London for a year.

John Pound also served as a director for the London General Omnibus Company. This company managed public transport in London. He was the chairman for over 30 years. During his time, he helped London switch from horse-drawn trams to self-propelled omnibuses. This was a big change for city travel.

On September 29, 1904, it was announced that John Pound would become the next Lord Mayor of London. He took over from Sir James Ritchie. On August 3, 1905, he was given the special title of 1st Baronet Pound.

John Pound passed away at his home on September 18, 1915, when he was 86 years old. He was buried at Ilford Cemetery.
