Sir Philip Rose, 1st Baronet (born April 12, 1816 – died April 17, 1883) was a British lawyer and a helper for politicians. He was a close friend and assistant to Benjamin Disraeli, a famous Prime Minister. Today, he is best known as one of the people the law firm Norton Rose Fulbright is named after.

Who Was Sir Philip Rose?

Philip Rose was born in 1816. His father, William Rose, was a doctor in the British Indian Army. His mother was Charlotte Rose.

Becoming a Lawyer

Philip became a lawyer in 1836 when he was 20 years old. For many years, he was a partner in a law firm called Baxter, Rose, Norton & Co. He left the firm in 1872. This law firm is still around today, known as Norton Rose Fulbright.

Helping Others: A New Hospital

When Philip was 25, he helped start a hospital. This happened after a clerk at his law firm, who had tuberculosis, couldn't get into other hospitals because he couldn't pay.

Philip was a key person in setting up the Hospital for Consumption and Diseases of the Chest. This hospital was for people with tuberculosis who couldn't afford treatment. Philip was the main helper and leader for the hospital from the very beginning until he passed away.

Working in Politics

Philip was also a close friend and adviser to Benjamin Disraeli. In 1874, he was given the special title of Baronet because of his important work helping the Conservative Party with legal matters.

Other Important Roles

After leaving his law firm, Philip spent his time helping with public matters. He was a treasurer for courts in Derbyshire. He was also a Deputy-Lieutenant of Middlesex. Later, he became a Magistrate and then the High Sheriff of Buckinghamshire in 1878.

In 1868, he started the Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust. This was the world's first collective investment scheme, which is a way for many people to invest their money together.

He also received a special award from the Ottoman Empire, called the Knight Commander of the Turkish Order of the Medjidie, for his services to them.
