Sir Richard Neave, 1st Baronet (born November 22, 1731 – died January 28, 1814) was an important British businessman. He also held a very important job as the Governor of the Bank of England, which is like the head of the country's main bank.

Sir Richard Neave's Life Story

Richard Neave was the son of James Neave and Susanna Trueman. He became a very successful merchant, which means he bought and sold goods, often from faraway places. He had many business interests in the West Indies and the Americas.

He was in charge of several important groups, including the Ramsgate Harbour Trust, which managed a busy port. He also led the Society of West Indian Merchants and the London Dock Company. These roles show how involved he was in trade and shipping. He was even a director for the Hudson's Bay Company, a famous trading company.

Sir Richard Neave was friends with George Read, an American politician. In 1765, George Read warned him that the British government's plan to tax the American colonies without letting them have a say in Parliament would likely lead to them wanting to become independent. This was a big deal that led to the American Revolution.

Neave lived in a house called Bower House. He wanted to become more than just a businessman; he wanted to be seen as a country gentleman. So, in 1772, he bought a large estate called Dagnam Park. He had the old house at Dagnam Park torn down and built a new, grand Georgian-style house in its place.

He worked for the Bank of England for 48 years! He became the Deputy Governor in 1781 and then the Governor from 1783 to 1785. During his time as Governor, the economy was recovering from a financial problem known as the "Bengal bubble crash." In 1794, he was given the important role of High Sheriff of Essex. He was also a member of the Society of Antiquaries of London, which studies old things, and was chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1785, which is a big honor for scientists. In 1795, he was given the title of Baronet, which is a special title of honor passed down through families.

Sir Richard Neave's Family

In 1761, Sir Richard Neave married Frances Bristow. Her father, John Bristow, was also a merchant and a Member of Parliament. A famous artist named Thomas Gainsborough painted a portrait of Sir Richard and Frances together around 1765.

Their daughter, Frances, married Beeston Long, who also became a Governor of the Bank of England. In 1806, both Sir Richard Neave and Beeston Long were leaders of the London Institution, a place for learning and research.

Another daughter, Catherine Mary, married Henry Howard, who was an antiquarian, meaning he studied old things and history.

Sir Richard's third daughter, Caroline Mary Neave, was born in 1781. She never married but spent her life working to improve how women and children were treated. She helped those in prisons, shelters, and even on ships that carried prisoners. She passed away in 1861.
