Sir Robert MacGowan Chapman, 2nd Baronet (born February 12, 1911 – died August 2, 1987) was an important British officer. He served in the Territorial Army, which is a part-time military force. He also held several important public roles. These included being the High Sheriff of Durham and a Deputy Lieutenant for the region. He was also known as the 2nd Baronet Chapman.

Robert Chapman's Early Life
Robert Chapman was born in 1911. His father was Sir Robert Chapman, the 1st Baronet. Robert went to Marlborough College and then to University of Cambridge. He finished his studies in 1933.
In 1934, he joined the Royal Artillery as an officer. He also became a qualified accountant in 1938. In 1941, he married Barbara May Tonks.
Serving in World War II
During the Second World War, Robert Chapman served in the British Army. He became a Captain in 1940. Later that year, he was promoted to Major.
In 1942, he became the commanding officer of the 124th Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment. This unit was part of the Royal Artillery.
Robert Chapman's Later Life and Public Service
After the war, Robert Chapman continued his public service. In 1945, he became a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants. He also became a Justice of the Peace for County Durham in 1946. This role involves helping to keep law and order.
In 1948, he was promoted to Lieutenant-Colonel. He served in the 325th Regiment, Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment. His father had also served in this same regiment. He received the Efficiency Decoration award in 1948 for his military service.
Important Roles in Public Life
In 1952, he became a Deputy Lieutenant of County Durham. This is a senior role that supports the Lord-Lieutenant, who represents the King or Queen in the county.
He was also the High Sheriff of County Durham in 1960. This is an old and important ceremonial position. In 1961, he was given the Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) award. This was for his public service in the North of England.
In 1963, he became the Honorary Colonel of the 463 (Durham Light Infantry) Light Air Defence Regiment. This was a special honorary military appointment.
Becoming the 2nd Baronet
On July 31, 1963, his father passed away. Robert then became the 2nd Baronet Chapman. A Baronet is a special title that is passed down through families.
He continued his public service, becoming the Vice-Lord-Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear in 1974. Sir Robert Chapman passed away on August 2, 1987, at the age of 76. His son, Sir David Robert Macgowan Chapman, became the 3rd Baronet.
