He had many different jobs in the army. One of his roles was as an aide-de-camp. This means he was a personal assistant to a high-ranking officer. He served the Governor on the Island of Saint Helena. This island became a crown colony in 1834. A crown colony was a territory directly controlled by the British government.

From 1848 to 1854, he was a lieutenant in the Royal Artillery. This part of the army uses large guns and cannons. Later, he became a lieutenant in the Falmouth Division of Royal Engineers. These engineers built and maintained military structures.
