About Site Gallery
Site Gallery is a registered charity. This means it needs to raise money to put on its exhibitions and events. It officially started in 1979. It received money from Yorkshire Arts, which is now part of Arts Council England.
How Site Gallery Started
The gallery began in 1978 as a photography gallery. It was in the Walkley area of Sheffield. Between 1979 and 1985, the gallery grew. It added spaces for workshops, offices, and darkrooms for developing photos. During this time, it also sent its exhibitions to other places around Britain.
In 1988, the gallery moved to its current home at 1 Brown Street. Matthew Conduit was the director who guided this move. In 1995, the gallery started showing new digital and multimedia art. This was alongside its traditional photography. In 1996, the gallery changed its name to Site Gallery. In July 2014, the gallery got more funding from the Arts Council. This money helped them make the building bigger and improve the gallery spaces.
