History of Sites
How Sites Got Its Name
The community of Sites was named in 1887 by Carl E. Grunsky. He chose the name to honor John H. Sites, who was an important landholder in the area. In the same year, a Post Office was opened in Sites. It served the community for many years before closing down in 1968.
The Colusa and Lake Railroad
Sites was once a busy place because it was the end point for a special train line. This was the narrow-gauge Colusa and Lake Railroad, which was finished in 1886. This railroad connected Sites to Colusa, the main town in the county.
The Sandstone Quarry
A big sandstone quarry operated near Sites during the late 1800s and early 1900s. A quarry is a place where stone is dug out of the ground. This quarry produced a lot of sandstone, which was then transported by the railroad. The sandstone from Sites Quarry was used to build some famous buildings. For example, it was used in San Francisco's Ferry Building and the Spreckels Building.
Future Plans for Sites Reservoir
The area around Sites has been considered a good location for a new project called the Sites Reservoir. This reservoir would be a large storage area for water. Its purpose would be to store water for the state's water system, helping to provide water to different parts of California.
