Zealand facts for kids
For other uses, see Zealand (disambiguation).
Zealand (in Danish: Sjælland) is a large island in the eastern part of Denmark. It is located just west of Sweden. A narrow stretch of water called the Øresund (a strait) separates Zealand from Sweden. Zealand covers an area of 7,031 square kilometers, making it the largest island in Denmark.
In 2016, about 2.2 million people lived on Zealand. Most of these people live in and around Copenhagen, which is the capital of Denmark. Copenhagen is located on Zealand's eastern coast.
Many bridges and tunnels connect Zealand to other parts of Denmark and even to Sweden. These important links include:
- The Great Belt Bridge, which connects Zealand to Funen, another island to the west.
- The Storstrøm Bridge, which links Zealand to Lolland, an island located to the south.
- The Øresund Bridge, which connects Zealand (specifically the island of Amager, which is very close to Zealand) to Sweden, near the city of Malmö.
