Skafida Peak facts for kids
Skafida Peak (Bulgarian: връх Скафида, romanized: vrah Skafida) is a tall mountain peak in Antarctica. It rises to 2,100 meters (about 6,890 feet) high. This peak is found near the northern end of the main ridge of the Sentinel Range. The Sentinel Range is part of the Ellsworth Mountains.
Skafida Peak has very steep slopes on its east and south sides. Some parts of these slopes are even free of ice. It stands above the Newcomer Glacier to its east. The peak gets its name from an old fortress called Skafida in Southeastern Bulgaria.
Where is Skafida Peak Located?
Skafida Peak is in a very cold and remote part of Antarctica. Its exact spot is at 77°42′29.8″S latitude and 86°32′23″W longitude. This means it's far south on the globe.
The peak is surrounded by other interesting places in the Sentinel Range. It is about 2.43 kilometers (1.5 miles) southeast of MacDonald Peak. It's also 6.2 kilometers (3.8 miles) northwest of Mount Crawford. Other nearby peaks include Mount Cornwell and Arzos Peak. Scientists from the United States mapped this area in 1961.
