Skeleton Lake (Cree: Cheply Sakhahigan) is a beautiful freshwater lake in Alberta, Canada. It's a popular spot for fun and relaxation! You can find it about 6.5 kilometers (4 miles) northeast of the town of Boyle, Alberta, along Highway 63. It is located in Athabasca County, about 170 kilometers (105 miles) northeast of the big city of Edmonton.

This lake is a great place for people to enjoy the outdoors. It's known for its clear water and the many cottages and places to stay around its shores.

Where Does the Name Come From?

The name "Skeleton Lake" comes from the Cree language. The Cree people called it "Cheply Sakhahigan," which means "place of the skeletons." Long ago, a Cree chief was buried near the eastern side of the lake.

Water Flow

Water leaves Skeleton Lake through a small creek. This creek flows eastwards, eventually reaching another lake called Amisk Lake.

Skeleton Lake is a busy place, especially in the summer! Many people have cottages or trailer sites around the lake. There are 11 different areas with homes and properties.

Lakeside Communities

The Summer Village of Mewatha Beach is on the lake, with many properties. The Summer Village of Bondiss is also on the shore. It has a public golf course where you can play a round. There is also a large campground called Shoreline Campground.
