Sleaford Mere Conservation Park is a special protected area in South Australia. It's located on the Jussieu Peninsula, which is at the very end of the Eyre Peninsula. This park is about 15 kilometers (9 miles) southwest of a town called Port Lincoln.

The park includes a lake called Sleaford Mere. This lake is always salty, like the ocean. It also has land next to the lake. The park shares its borders with Lincoln National Park to the north and east.

About Sleaford Mere Conservation Park

Sleaford Mere Conservation Park is a place where nature is protected. It was first set up on November 20, 1969. Back then, it was called the Sleaford Mere National Park.

Later, on April 27, 1972, its name changed. It became the Sleaford Mere Conservation Park. This change happened under a new law called the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972.

Size and Location

As of 2018, the park covers an area of 5.95 square kilometers (about 2.3 square miles). It is found within the area known as the Hundred of Sleaford. The park is an important part of the local environment.

Why Sleaford Mere Park is Important

In 1980, experts described why Sleaford Mere Conservation Park is so special. They said it protects a beautiful salty lake. This lake is a great place for many waterbirds to find food.

Wildlife in the Park

Some birds, like the chestnut teal, are known to have their babies here. The lake is also home to marine fish. There's even a large group of skates living in the lake. These skates are "land-locked," meaning they can't leave the lake.

Park Protection Status

The park is classified as an IUCN Category III protected area. This means it's recognized internationally for protecting natural features. It was also listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1980. This register no longer exists, but it showed the park's importance.
