Slickville's History

Slickville is famous for its unique name, which comes from its past. Like many other mining towns in the Appalachian region, Slickville was named after an important mining official, Donald Slick.

How Slickville Was Founded

Slickville was planned by the Cambria Steel Company, which later became part of Bethlehem Steel. It was built in 1917 by the Midvale Steel and Ordnance Company. This town was special because it had many modern features that older mining towns didn't. For example, all the single-family houses had indoor plumbing. It also had a fairly large "downtown" area that was shared with nearby towns like Jamison (also called Elrico) and Patton.

The Mining Era and Changes

Slickville was at its busiest until 1942, when the main mine closed down. Even after the mine closed, many of the original company houses are still standing. You can also still see the old company store, the mine car repair shop, and the mine office (which even had a jail in its basement!). The grade school, which closed in 1985, and four churches are also still there.

Over the years, some smaller houses and business buildings in the downtown area have been removed or turned into private homes. For example, the Ukrainian association building, which became a civic center, was removed around 1995.

Transportation and Growth

The Pennsylvania railroad used to run through Slickville, but the last train passed through in the late 1950s. However, the old rail line from Slickville to Saltsburg was turned into a hiking trail in 2007. This trail was later extended towards Delmont around 2011. There are plans to extend it even further to Trafford and connect it to a larger trail system. The local ballfield was also improved around this time with help from the Slickville Lions club.

Since the mines closed in the 1940s and 1950s, Slickville has found new ways to support itself. It benefits from being close to bigger cities like Greensburg, Jeannette, Latrobe, and the eastern suburbs of Pittsburgh. Many people in Slickville now work in service or manufacturing jobs in these nearby areas. Even though it's still a bit outside the main suburban areas, places like Murrysville are only about five miles away.
