Slyudyanka (Russian: Слюдянка) is a town in Russia. It is located in the Irkutsk Oblast, right at the southern end of Lake Baikal. Lake Baikal is a very famous and deep lake! Slyudyanka is about 126 kilometers (78 miles) south of Irkutsk, which is the main city of the region. In 2010, about 18,574 people lived there.
This town is an important stop on the Trans-Siberian Railway, a very long train line that crosses Russia. It is also where the old Circum-Baikal Railway begins.
What's in a Name?
The name Slyudyanka comes from the Russian word for mica. Mica is a type of shiny mineral. This name was chosen because there are many places nearby where mica and other minerals can be found.
A Look Back in Time
The Slyudyanka railway station and the settlement around it were first built in 1905. It officially became a town in 1936.
