History of Smithfield
Smithfield has a long history, especially with transportation. It used to be a stop on the Louisville and Cincinnati Railroad. This railroad was important for moving goods and people.

Smithfield is located in the southwestern part of Henry County. It is about 7 miles (11 km) southwest of New Castle, which is the main town and "county seat" of Henry County. A county seat is where the county government offices are located.
The city is also about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of La Grange. It is further away from the larger city of Louisville, about 32 miles (51 km) to the northeast.
