History of Smyrna
Smyrna became an official town in 1895. It was named after the Smyrna Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. This church had been a place of worship for local families for 50 years before the town was formed.
Important developments helped the town grow. In 1888, a railroad station was built by the Charleston, Cincinnati and Chicago Railroad. This railroad later became part of the Southern Railway. Soon after, a store called a mercantile business was opened nearby by F.D. Horn.
An important historical site near Smyrna is the Jackson's Furnace Site (38YK217). This site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1987. This means it is recognized as a special place in American history.

Smyrna is found in the western part of York County. A small part of the town also stretches northwest into Cherokee County. The town's exact location is 35°2′48″N 81°24′47″W / 35.04667°N 81.41306°W.
