Meet Sniz and Fondue: Otter Roommates
The show is all about the daily lives of two otter roommates, Sniz and Fondue. Sniz is super energetic and loves to act on impulse. This often gets him and Fondue into funny trouble. Sniz is easy to spot with his bright lime-green mohawk.
Fondue is usually quite nervous because of Sniz's wild ideas. He often has to be on alert for whatever Sniz might do next. Fondue always wears a blue chef's hat. They also lived with two other roommates, Snuppa and Bianca, for a while.
How Sniz & Fondue Was Made
The creator of Sniz & Fondue is Michael Pearlstein, who is now known as Mike R. Brandon. The idea for the show came from characters in his earlier comic series called "Puppy Action!".
From Comics to Cartoons
One day, Linda Simensky, who was in charge of Nickelodeon's shows, found the first "Puppy Action!" comic. She called Michael Pearlstein and asked if he wanted to make a test episode for a possible TV show. So, in 1992, he created a pilot episode called "Psyched for Snuppa". It was made with Stretch Films and Jumbo Pictures.
Nickelodeon liked Sniz and Fondue a lot. Even though they chose another pilot, Trash-O-Madness (which became Rocko's Modern Life), they decided to make Sniz and Fondue into short cartoons for KaBlam!.
Behind the Scenes: Who Did What?
Michael Pearlstein was very involved in making the show. He wrote the stories, drew the storyboards, designed the characters, and even created the title cards. He also did some extra voices for the characters.
For the first season, the animation was done by Pitchi Poy Animation Productions in Israel. Later, for the second and third seasons, the animation moved to Funbag Animation Studios in Canada. Most of the writing and animation work was done in New York City. The show also used a special song called "Toys for Boys" for its title card.
A cool thing about the show is that the characters, especially Sniz, often sing or quote parts of real songs. For example, in "Stuntbike Sniz," Sniz sang a line from "You're the Inspiration." In "Crustacean Sensations," he sang "Night Fever" by The Bee Gees.
Why the Show Ended
The series eventually ended because Michael Pearlstein decided to leave. He was doing a lot of the work himself and felt frustrated. Also, Funbag Animation Studios was having financial problems. Michael Pearlstein was offered a chance to make a longer, half-hour show based on Sniz & Fondue. But because he left, that offer went to Stephen Hillenburg for SpongeBob SquarePants instead. The very last episode, "Hosed!", aired in 1997.
Meet the Characters
- Sniz Bronkowski — Sniz is a wild and crazy otter. He often gets into trouble every day. Luckily, his roommate Fondue usually finds a way to help them out. Sniz always has a green mohawk. In one episode, he even went bald from using too much hair gel! Rick Gomez (credited as "R.H. Gomez") was the voice of Sniz.
- Squeaky Fondue — Fondue is Sniz's roommate. He can get frustrated, but he is also very smart. He is always seen wearing his blue chef's hat. His real name is Squeaky. Oscar Riba voiced Fondue. Fondue is named after the food fondue.
- Snuppa Doojers — Snuppa was one of Sniz and Fondue's roommates. He is bald, like Fondue. Snuppa and his girlfriend Bianca lived with Sniz and Fondue. They were written out of the show in the third season. This happened because the writers felt the stories focused more on just Sniz and Fondue. John Andrew Walsh was the voice of Snuppa.
- Bianca Lo Bianca — Bianca was also one of Sniz and Fondue's roommates. She has a blonde hairstyle that looks a bit like a clown's. She is Snuppa's girlfriend. Like Snuppa, Bianca was phased out in the third season. Monica Lee Gradischek (credited as Lee Bashforth) voiced Bianca.
