Sno Balls are yummy cream-filled chocolate cakes. They are covered with fluffy marshmallow frosting and coconut flakes. These treats are made by Hostess.

Sno Balls are usually pink, which is their most famous color. But you can also find them in other fun colors! These include chocolate, lemon, white, green, and blue. Special colors often appear for holidays or certain times of the year. You usually buy them in packages of two. They are sold in many convenience stores and grocery stores across the United States.

In the United Kingdom, there's a similar cake called a "Snowball" made by Tunnock's. These often have dried coconut on them. They are usually brown because they might have chocolate on the outside.

The Sweet History of Sno Balls

Sno Balls first came out in 1947. Hostess says they became popular because people could finally buy more flour and sugar. These ingredients were hard to get during World War II due to rationing. Rationing meant people could only buy a small amount of certain foods.

How Sno Balls Changed Over Time

When Sno Balls were first made, they were white. They also did not have the creamy filling inside. The delicious cream filling was added a few years later in 1950.

Later on, Hostess started adding pink color to the coconut flakes. At first, only one cake in each package was pink. But soon, the company decided it was easier to make both cakes in the package pink. This is why most Sno Balls you see today are pink!

Sno Ball Colors for Every Season

Hostess loves to make Sno Balls in different colors for special occasions. Sometimes these colorful Sno Balls even get their own fun names!

  • Green ("Lucky Puffs") – For St. Patrick's Day
  • Lavender ("Hoppers") – For Springtime
  • Neon green ("Glo Balls") – For Halloween
  • Orange ("Glo Balls") – Also for Halloween
  • Orange ("Scary Cakes") – Another Halloween treat
  • White – For Winter and Christmas
