Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Sobol is a small place in southeastern Pushmataha County, Oklahoma. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It's a quiet spot in the beautiful state of Oklahoma.

The Story of Sobol

Sobol got its own United States Post Office on January 21, 1911. It was named after a man named Harry Sobol. He was a merchant, which means he owned a store, in a nearby town called Fort Towson.

For a long time, Sobol was quite isolated. This means it was hard to get to and from the community. But things changed when Oklahoma State Highway 3 was built and paved. This highway now connects Sobol to other towns. You can travel west to Rattan or east to Broken Bow.

Nature Around Sobol

Sobol is surrounded by amazing natural features. Just a few miles to its east, you'll find Pine Creek Lake. This lake was built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Their main goal was to control floods along Little River and Pine Creek. Today, Pine Creek Lake is also a very popular spot for fishing.

Mountains also surround Sobol. To the north, you can see Caney Mountain. To the south, there is Bull Mountain. A path called the Caney Mountain Trail starts near Sobol. This trail leads to several other tall peaks in the Kiamichi Mountains. These include Blackjack Mountain, Caney Mountain, Musket Mountain, Wolf Mountain, and East Signal Peak.
