Sol Mamakwa is a Canadian politician. He was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in 2018. He represents the area called Kiiwetinoong for the Ontario New Democratic Party (ONDP).
Mamakwa is a member of the Kingfisher Lake First Nation. He speaks Oji-Cree as his first language. He is one of the few politicians of full First Nations background to be elected to the assembly.
Before Politics
Before he became a politician, Sol Mamakwa worked for the Nishnawbe Aski Nation. This organization helps First Nations communities in Northern Ontario. He worked in Sioux Lookout, a town in Ontario.
A Historic Speech
On May 28, 2024, Sol Mamakwa made history. He became the first person to give a speech in an Indigenous language in the Ontario Legislature. He spoke for 10 minutes in Anishininiimowin, which is the Oji-Cree language. This was a very important moment for Indigenous languages in Canada.
What He Does Now
As of August 2024, Sol Mamakwa has important roles. He is the Deputy Leader of the Official Opposition. This means he helps lead the main opposition party in the government.
He is also a critic for Indigenous and Treaty Relations. This means he watches how the government works with Indigenous peoples. He also focuses on Northern Development, helping communities in Northern Ontario.
