The Soldier River is a river in western Iowa, United States. It is about 67 miles (108 km) (108 km) long. This river flows into the Missouri River. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger river.
Over the years, people have changed parts of the Soldier River. They have made some sections straighter. This is called channelization and it helps control where the water flows.
Where Does the Soldier River Start and Go?
The Soldier River begins in the southeastern part of Ida County. From there, it flows mostly towards the southwest. It travels through several counties in Iowa.
These counties include northwestern Crawford County, southeastern Monona County, and northwestern Harrison County. Along its path, the river passes by several towns.
Some of the towns it flows near are Ute, Soldier, Moorhead, and Pisgah. Finally, the Soldier River joins the Missouri River. It connects through a special channel.
This joining point is about 5 miles (8 km) west-northwest of Mondamin.
Branches of the Soldier River
The Soldier River has other smaller rivers that flow into it. These are like its branches.
- The East Soldier River joins the main Soldier River near the town of Ute. The East Soldier River starts near Schleswig and flows past Charter Oak.
- The East Soldier River also has its own branch. This branch is called the Middle Soldier River. The Middle Soldier River flows past Ricketts before joining the East Soldier River.
