Solomon Bundy's Early Life

Solomon Bundy was born in Oxford, New York, in Chenango County, New York, in 1823. This was a time when western New York was growing and developing. He went to Oxford Academy for his education.

After school, he taught for several years. He also studied law by reading books and working with lawyers. In 1859, he became a lawyer and started his own practice in Oxford. While he was studying law, he also worked as a justice of the peace. He was also a clerk for the Board of Supervisors in Chenango County.

His Career in Law and Politics

After becoming a lawyer, Bundy was elected as the district attorney for Chenango County. He held this important job from 1862 to 1865.

Later, he was elected to the United States Congress as a member of the Republican Party. He served in the Forty-fifth Congress from March 4, 1877, to March 3, 1879. He decided not to run for re-election in 1878.

After his time in politics, Solomon Bundy went back to practicing law in Oxford. He passed away there and was buried in Riverview Cemetery.

Bundy's Family Legacy

Solomon Bundy married and had a family. His son, McGeorge Bundy, also became a lawyer. McGeorge moved to Grand Rapids, Michigan, and settled there.

McGeorge's son, Harvey Hollister Bundy, went to Yale University and then studied law at Harvard University. Harvey settled in Boston, where he married and started his own family. He worked in high-level government roles with Henry L. Stimson. These roles were under Presidents Herbert Hoover and later Franklin D. Roosevelt.

Harvey's two sons, William Putnam Bundy and McGeorge Bundy, both became lawyers. They also served in intelligence during World War II. Later, they became important advisors to Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. They especially advised on matters related to the Vietnam War.

Today, Solomon Bundy's three-times-great-grandson, Jake Auchincloss, is a current congressman. He is a member of the Democratic Party and represents Massachusetts's 4th congressional district.
