Solomon Porter Hood (July 30, 1853 – 1943) was an important American diplomat. He served as the United States Minister to Liberia from 1921 to 1926. A minister in this role is like an ambassador, representing their country in another nation.

Early Life

Solomon Porter Hood was born on July 30, 1853. His hometown was Lancaster, Pennsylvania. His parents were Lewis Price and Matilda Catharine Hood.

A Career in Diplomacy

President Warren G. Harding chose Solomon Porter Hood for a special job. On October 26, 1921, Hood became the United States Minister to Liberia. This meant he was the top American representative in that country. He officially started his duties on February 13, 1922.

Hood worked in this important role until January 9, 1926. During his time in Liberia, he also served in another position. From 1922 to 1924, he was the United States Consul General in Monrovia. Monrovia is the capital city of Liberia. A Consul General helps American citizens who are living or traveling abroad.

Personal Life

Solomon Porter Hood married Mary Anna Davis in 1884. He was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church. This church is a historically African-American Christian denomination. Hood also belonged to two fraternal organizations. These were the Odd Fellows and the Elks. These groups are known for their community service and social activities.

Later Years and Passing

Solomon Porter Hood passed away in 1943. He died in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey. He was laid to rest at Crystal Stream Cemetery. This cemetery is located in Locust, New Jersey.
