Solomon de Medina facts for kids
Sir Solomon de Medina (born around 1650 in Bordeaux, France – died September 15, 1730, in Amsterdam, Netherlands) was a very important person who helped the English army. He was known for supplying goods and services to the military of King William III. Sir Solomon de Medina made history by becoming the first Jew to be given the special title of a knight in England.
A Helpful Businessman for the Army
Solomon de Medina was a rich businessman who worked closely with King William III. He traveled with the King to England to help supply the army. This meant he made sure soldiers had what they needed, like food and other supplies.
In 1702, Solomon de Medina moved back to Amsterdam. Even from there, he continued his work, often with the help of his son-in-law in London. He became very well-known because he had many important dealings with the English government. People often called him "the Jew Medina" because of his fame.
Supporting the Troops in War
During a big conflict called the War of the Spanish Succession (which lasted from 1702 to 1714), Sir Solomon de Medina played a key role. He went with a famous general, John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough, during his military campaigns. Sir Solomon helped by giving money and making sure the soldiers had enough food and supplies.
He also set up a very fast way to send news, even quicker than the government's own system! This meant his agents often knew important information before the King's own ministers did.
A Special Payment and Knighthood
Sir Solomon de Medina's work was so important that it was even talked about in Parliament in 1711. Some people questioned why the Duke of Marlborough was paying Medina £6,000 every year. The Duke explained that this money was used to get very reliable and important information. People used to say that every British victory in battle helped make Sir Solomon de Medina richer, as well as bringing glory to England.
For all his valuable services, Sir Solomon de Medina was given the title of a knight in the year 1700. This was a very special honor, as he was the first Jewish person in England to become a knight. He was also one of the biggest givers of money to the Bevis Marks Synagogue, a famous Jewish place of worship in London.
