Sonchus sinuatus is a special type of flowering plant. It belongs to the Asteraceae family, which includes plants like daisies. This plant was once known by the name Dendroseris macrantha. It is very rare and can only be found in one place in the world. That place is the Juan Fernández Islands of Chile. Sadly, this plant is in danger of disappearing. Its natural home is being destroyed, which is called habitat loss.

About Its Name

How Its Name Changed

This plant has had a few different scientific names over the years.

  • It was first described in 1833. Back then, it was called Rea macrantha.
  • Later, in 1921, scientists moved it to a different group of plants. This group was called Dendroseris.
  • Then, in 2012, scientists used new methods to study plant families. They found that Dendroseris plants were actually part of a larger group. This larger group was the Sonchus genus.
  • Because of this discovery, all the plants from Dendroseris were moved. They became part of the Sonchus genus.
  • However, there was a problem. The name Sonchus macranthus was already being used. It was the name for a different plant species.
  • So, scientists had to give our plant a new name. They chose Sonchus sinuatus. This new name made sure each plant had its own unique scientific identity.
