History of Sonora

Sonora started as a camp for workers building the L&N Railroad in the late 1850s. This camp was first called "Bucksnort." People thought the sounds of the early train engines sounded like deer snorting!

In 1859, a train station was built there, and the name changed to "Sonora." This new name might have come from Sonora, Mexico. A person who helped build the railroad was from there.

A famous U.S. Navy diver, Carl Brashear, grew up in Sonora. He was born in nearby Tonieville.
