History of the Soo Line Building
The Soo Line Building was finished in 1915. It was designed by architect Robert W. Gibson. For a long time, it was known as the First National Bank building. This was because it was built for the First National Bank of Minneapolis. This bank is now part of U.S. Bancorp.
From Bank to Apartments
After the bank moved out, the building became the main office for the Soo Line Railroad. The Canadian Pacific Railway bought the Soo Line Railroad in 1990. Their U.S. offices then moved into the building.
In 2011, a company called Village Green Properties bought the building. They paid about $11.3 million for it. After the offices moved out, work began in 2012 to turn the building into apartments. By 2013, it became a luxury apartment building with 254 units. It also has a restaurant on the ground floor.
Location and Neighbors
The Soo Line Building is located in downtown Minneapolis. It is right across Marquette Avenue from the 510 Marquette Building. This building used to be the original Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis.
The building is also very close to public transportation. The Nicollet Mall station is right in front of it. This station serves the Blue and Green light rail lines. After the Canadian Pacific Railroad moved out, they moved to a nearby building now called Canadian Pacific Plaza.
